Ciranda das Mulheres – inside and out of the 9th Leão do Norte Music Showcase (2017)

Radiophonic piece by Janete El Haouli and Julio de Paula, final work for the artist residency promoted by SESC Pernambuco, undertaken between October 9th and 13th 2017. The act of listening to the streets and soundscapes of Caruaru city, as well as to the sounds of debates, workshops and performances of the Music Showcase, inspired the composition process of what the artist calls a “sounding portrait” or a “cinema for the ears”. As a result of an immersion into the universes of the singers, the scenes have been constructed in fluent, dreamy acoustic layers, made upon the sound of talks, interviews, singings, workshops, lectures, concerts.

With the collaborative participation of Agda Moura, Ana Carolina Murgel, Anastácia Rodrigues, Badi Assad, Bia Marinho, Camila Yasmine, Cátia de França, Ceumar Coelho, Déa Trancoso, Diego Janatã, Djuena Tikuna, Gabi da Pele Preta, Inaicyra Falcão, Janete El Haouli, João do Pife, Juçara Marçal, Letícia Bertelli, Marcela Bertelli, Maria Helena, Marlui Miranda, Mawaca, Ná Ozzetti, Nathália Fragoso, Regina Machado, Renuzia Neta, Riá Oliveira e Sofia Freire.

Janete El Haouli (Cambé, Brazil, 1955). Musician, sound/radio artist, cultural producer and researcher with an emphasis on experimentation of radiophonic media and voice experimentation. She was a professor at the State University of Londrina/UEL, Department of Music and Theater (1981-2011). Her research on the voice of Demetrio Stratos was published in Italy, Brazil and Mexico: Demetrio Stratos: In Search of Voice-Music.

Julio de Paula (1972) works with documentation mechanisms, especially traditional culture. Radioartist, is interested in recording and displacement of Latin America soundscapes. He is director of programs at Radio Cultura FM (São Paulo), where he developed the “Veredas – Music and Popular Tradition in Brazil” series, awarded at the VI Internacional Biennial of Radio (Mexico City, 2006). In 2012, he presented “Edgard” at Mobile Radio BSP (30th Bienal de São Paulo). In 2015, commissioned by Kunst Radio – Radio Kunst, performed the piece “El Sur es el Norte”. In his research, he seeks a point of contact between the radio and the other arts. Lives and works in São Paulo.
