State oppression in a dystopia fades the hopes of protest and resistance into desperation. The 2017 G20 Summit seemed like a celebration of such desperation; all the anger and resistance faded into the tranquility of world leaders listening Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. An ode to joy, an ode to teargas and police brutality, to global oppression, arms sales, mass shootings, nuclear power, post-cold war diplomacies and endless statements of administrators about world peace.

21st century politics made us witness the rise of right-wing authoritarianism once again, we saw people being massacred in the name of religion, we saw the domination of the patriarchy in full transparency and we witnessed globalization failing at its promises. And we witness it all with a single click.
Our submission to dystopian authority has no beginning or end. Being born into today’s world we are already submitted to the dystopia, and today’s world is actually when joy indeed gives us the farewell; goodbye utopia.

Bio: Ipek Gorgun. Born in Ankara (1984), İpek Görgün graduated from Bilkent University’s Political Science department. After an M.A. degree in Philosophy (Galatasaray University), she enrolled in the Ph.D. program in the department of Sonic Arts at Istanbul Technical University’s Center for Advanced Studies in Music.
